How the Counts Work

Words are whitespace-separated tokens containing at least one letter or number (so stray punctuation does not inflate the count). Reading time assumes 238 words per minute — the research average for adult silent reading of English prose; speaking time assumes 150 wpm, the pace of presentations and audiobooks. Paste text in and the numbers update live; nothing is uploaded anywhere — the counting happens in your browser. Frequently Asked Questions

How do you count words in a text?

Split on whitespace and count the tokens — this counter additionally requires a letter or digit in the token, so lines of dashes or ellipsis don’t register as “words.” Hyphenated words count as one; numbers count as words.

How long does it take to read 1,000 words?

About 4 minutes 12 seconds at the 238 wpm research average for adult readers — faster readers clear it in ~3 minutes, careful study reading takes far longer.

How many words is a 5-minute speech?

About 750 words at a natural 150 wpm presentation pace — 650 if you pause for effect, 800 if you rush (don’t rush; write 700).

Does this tool store or upload my text?

No. Counting happens entirely in your browser with JavaScript; the text never touches a server. Safe for drafts, applications and anything unpublished.

Why do word counts differ between tools?

Edge cases: hyphenated compounds, numbers, em-dashes without spaces, and stray punctuation are counted differently by Word, Google Docs and web tools — usually within 1%. This page’s rule (tokens containing a letter or digit) is stated openly so you can predict it.

Is this word counter free?

Yes — free, unlimited, no sign-up.
