This text to binary converter translates in both directions: text into its binary representation (ASCII/UTF-8 bytes as 8-bit groups) and binary code back into readable text.
How Text Becomes Binary
Every character is a number underneath: ASCII assigns H = 72, i = 105, and computers store numbers as binary bytes — 72 becomes 01001000, 105 becomes 01101001 (the pre-filled example, verified). Modern text uses UTF-8, where characters beyond the ASCII set (é, €, emoji) expand into 2–4 bytes; this converter encodes full UTF-8, so anything you can type survives the round trip. Numbers themselves (not text) convert on our Binary Converter. Part of our Other Calculators collection.
Worked Examples
- "Hi" → 01001000 01101001 (H = 72, i = 105)
- "A" → 01000001 (65 — capital letters live at 65–90; lowercase at 97–122, exactly 32 apart, which is why toggling one bit flips case)
- Decoding 01001000 01100101 01101100 01101100 01101111 → "Hello" — paste it into the input and press Binary → Text
- A space is a byte too: 00100000 (32) separates the "words" of binary text just as it does here.
Where Binary Text Actually Shows Up
- CTF puzzles, geocaching mysteries and escape-room clues (binary is the world's second-favorite puzzle encoding, after Morse)
- Learning how encoding works — the visible version of what files and network packets carry
- Debugging mojibake: when text garbles, inspecting bytes distinguishes "wrong encoding" from "corrupted data"
- Jewelry, tattoos and classroom posters — binary names and messages are a genre; this tool guarantees yours says what you think it says

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I convert text to binary?
Take each character's code (ASCII/UTF-8), write it as an 8-bit binary number, and join with spaces: "Hi" → 01001000 01101001. This converter does it for any length of text.
How do I read binary back into text?
Group the bits into bytes of 8, convert each byte to its number, and look the number up as a character code: 01001000 = 72 = "H". The Binary → Text direction above automates it and tolerates spaces or no spaces.
What is the binary for the alphabet?
Capitals A–Z are 65–90 (01000001–01011010); lowercase a–z are 97–122 (01100001–01111010). Digits 0–9 are 48–57. The patterns reward a look — case differs by exactly one bit.
Does it handle emoji and accents?
Yes — encoding is UTF-8, so é, ñ, € and emoji encode to their multi-byte sequences and decode back losslessly. Pure-ASCII tools break on these; this one doesn't.
Is binary the same as Base64 or hex?
All are byte encodings with different alphabets and purposes: binary (base 2) is the raw form, hex (base 16) the compact human-debug form, Base64 the email/web-safe form. This page covers the binary ↔ text pair specifically.
Is this text to binary converter free?
Yes — free, unlimited, and entirely in your browser.
