This swimming pace calculator speaks the swimmer’s unit — pace per 100. Enter any swim (distance + time) for your pace and predicted times at every standard distance, or set a target pace and see the splits.

Why Swimmers Think in Hundreds

Sets are written in 100s, pace clocks tick in 100s, and CSS (critical swim speed) tests are timed over 400 + 200 — pace per 100 m (or yards) is the sport’s universal exchange rate. The math is simple division; the value is the prediction table, which assumes you can hold the pace (distance swimming’s eternal negotiation — reality usually taxes longer distances a few seconds per 100; train the pace, race the tax down). Worked Example (Verified)

  • 400 m in 6:00 → pace 1:30 per 100 m
  • At that pace: 800 m in 12:00, 1500 m in 22:30 (the classic mile-in-a-25-pool scheduling unit)
  • Interval translation: a set of 10 × 100 on the 1:45 send-off means holding 1:30 swims with 15 seconds of wall-rest — pace and send-off are different numbers that novices conflate exactly once

Pace Landmarks (Freestyle, Long-Course Meters)

Per 100 m Who swims there
2:30+ New lap swimmers building endurance
2:00 Fit recreational standard
1:40 Strong age-group / triathlete front-pack open water
1:20 Competitive club level
1:05 Elite distance pace (world-record 1500 m averages ≈ 0:58/100)

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good swimming pace per 100m?

2:00/100 m is a solid fit-recreational benchmark; 1:40 marks strong triathletes and club swimmers; competitive swimmers train well under 1:20, and elite distance pace is near 1:00. Judge progress against your own trend, not the fast lane.

How do I calculate my pace from a set?

Total time ÷ total distance × 100. A 400 m swim in 6:00 is 360 s ÷ 4 = 90 s = 1:30 per 100 m. For sets with rest, use swimming time only — rest intervals belong to the send-off, not the pace.

What is CSS pace in swimming?

Critical swim speed — your sustainable threshold pace, estimated from flat-out 400 m and 200 m time trials: CSS (per 100) = (400 time − 200 time) ÷ 3. Training at CSS is the swimming version of threshold running.

Are yards and meters paces interchangeable?

No — 100 yards is 91.44 m, so the same effort shows ~8–9% slower per 100 in meters. This calculator keeps the unit you choose and labels predictions in it; convert deliberately when switching pools.

Why am I slower in open water?

No walls (push-offs are free speed — short-course pools flatter everyone), no lane line to follow, sighting costs, currents and chop. A 5–10% open-water tax on pool pace is normal for developing swimmers.
