This rowing split calculator converts the erg’s native language — the 500 m split — into watts and finish times. Enter a split to see predicted 2k/5k/6k times and power, or a distance + time to find the split.

The Cubic Law That Runs the Erg

Air resistance on the flywheel is unforgiving physics: watts = 2.80 × (500 ÷ split-in-seconds)³ — the Concept2 relation. The cube is the story: rowing 10% faster demands 33% more power, and halving a split requires eight times the watts. It is why the gap between a 1:45 and a 1:30 split (302 W vs 480 W) represents years of training, and why erg scores are so brutally honest. Water rowing taxes are different (drag hulls, currents), but the split is the shared dialect. Part of our Sports Calculators collection.

Worked Example (Verified)

  • Split of 1:45/500 m (105 seconds): watts = 2.80 × (500/105)³ = 302 W
  • Held steady: 2k = 4 × 1:45 = 7:00.0 — the hobby’s most famous round number; 5k = 17:30; 6k = 21:00
  • Predictions assume an even split held to the line; real pieces fade or negative-split ±2–3 splits across distances, so treat the 5k/6k projections as targets with character development pending

Split Landmarks (2k Test Equivalent)

Split /500 m Watts 2k time Who rows it
2:30 104 W 10:00 Fit beginner
2:10 159 W 8:40 Trained recreational
2:00 202 W 8:00 Strong club standard (men’s benchmark chase)
1:45 302 W 7:00 Competitive
1:30 480 W 6:00 Elite heavyweight territory

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good rowing split?

For a 2k test: a 2:00/500 m split (8:00) is a strong recreational mark for men; 2:15 (9:00) the comparable women’s benchmark; competitive rowers live at 1:45 and below (men) / 2:00 and below (women). Context — age, weight, training years — matters more than any table.

How many watts is a 2:00 split?

202 watts by the erg’s cubic law: 2.80 × (500/120)³. A 1:45 split is 302 W; the cube means small split gains cost disproportionate power.

What split do I need for a sub-7 2k?

Exactly 1:45.0/500 m averaged over four consecutive 500s — 302 W sustained for seven minutes, which is why sub-7 is a genuine athletic milestone.

Why do erg watts not match my bike power meter?

They’re both honest watts — but rowing recruits more muscle mass with a different duty cycle, so sustainable numbers differ by athlete. The erg’s cubic relation ties split to flywheel power; your cycling FTP is a separate physiological test.

Should longer pieces use the same split?

No — sustainable split slows with duration (roughly +3–5 splits from 2k to 6k for trained rowers, more for beginners). Use the projections here as the same-split ideal, then pace real pieces a couple of splits softer at distance.
