This final grade calculator answers the end-of-semester question: given your current grade and how much the final exam is worth, what score do you need on the final to land the course grade you want?

The Final Grade Formula
Course grades are weighted averages: your current work contributes (100% − final weight), the final contributes its weight. Solving the average for the unknown exam score gives:
needed = (target − current × (1 − w)) ÷ w
Worked example (verified): current grade 88%, target 90%, final worth 40%: needed = (90 − 88 × 0.6) ÷ 0.4 = (90 − 52.8) ÷ 0.4 = 93%. Ambitious, possible — the scenario table under the calculator shows grades for every plausible exam score, from the 0% floor to the 100% ceiling. This calculator sits in our Other Calculators collection alongside the GPA Calculator, which converts finished course grades into your GPA.
Reading the Three Situations
- Needed ≤ 100%: the target is alive; the number tells you exactly how much margin you have. Study to the number, not to anxiety.
- Needed > 100%: the target is mathematically gone (unless extra credit exists). Redirect: the table’s 100% row shows your best possible grade — protect that instead.
- Needed ≤ 0%: the target is locked in regardless. (Sit the exam anyway — most schools zero an unattempted final regardless of math.)
Strategy Notes from the Math
- The final’s leverage is exactly its weight: a 40%-weighted final moves your grade 4 points for every 10 points of exam score. Light finals (10–15%) mostly ratify the semester; heavy finals (40–50%) rewrite it.
- Your current grade’s contribution is already banked: current × (1 − w) can never be taken away. Compute your floor (the 0% row) during stressful weeks — it is usually less scary than imagined.
- If your syllabus weights categories differently (homework dropped, curve applied), use your gradebook’s current percentage and the final’s syllabus weight — the formula is the same.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate what I need on my final?
needed = (target grade − current grade × (1 − final weight)) ÷ final weight. With 88% current, a 90% target and a 40% final, you need 93%.
What if I need more than 100%?
The target grade is out of reach on points alone. Check for extra credit, dropped-lowest policies or curves — otherwise optimize for the best achievable grade (the 100% scenario row).
What is my grade if I skip the final?
current × (1 − weight) — see the 0% row of the scenario table. With 88% current and a 40% final, skipping yields 52.8%: a steep price.
Does this work for points-based classes?
Convert to percentages first: current% = points earned ÷ points possible so far, and weight = final’s points ÷ total course points. The formula then applies directly.
How does the final grade affect my GPA?
Each course’s letter grade converts to grade points (A = 4.0, B = 3.0…) weighted by credits — the GPA Calculator does that computation across all your courses.
Is this final grade calculator free?
Yes — free, instant, no sign-up. Good luck on the exam.
