Cumulative GPA Calculator
Percentage to GPA Converter
What Is a GPA Calculator?
A GPA calculator works out your grade point average — the single number schools use to summarize your academic performance. Each letter grade is converted to grade points (A = 4.0, B = 3.0, and so on), multiplied by the credit hours of the course, and averaged. Whether you are asking “what is my GPA?” after finals, planning what grades you need next semester, or converting a percentage to the 4.0 scale, this tool does the math in one place.
It works for both high school GPA and college GPA. If you only need the grade for one class — including what you need on the final exam — use our Grade Calculator instead.
How to Use This GPA Calculator
- Add a row for each course you took this term (the course name is optional).
- Select your letter grade and enter the course’s credit hours (most college courses are 3; high school courses are usually 1 — or enter 1 for every class if your school counts classes equally).
- Choose the level: Regular, Honors (+0.5) or AP/IB (+1.0). This only affects the weighted result.
- Click Calculate GPA. You get both your unweighted GPA (pure 4.0 scale) and your weighted GPA side by side.
- To project your overall average, fill in the Cumulative GPA section with your current GPA and credits completed.
Weighted vs. Unweighted GPA
An unweighted GPA treats every class the same: an A is 4.0 whether the class is regular or Advanced Placement. It never goes above 4.0. A weighted GPA rewards harder classes — typically +0.5 for Honors and +1.0 for AP or IB — so a weighted GPA can reach 5.0. Colleges usually look at both, and many recalculate GPAs on their own scale. When a school asks for your GPA without saying which, the unweighted 4.0 figure is the safer answer.
The GPA Formula
GPA = Σ (grade points × credit hours) ÷ Σ credit hours
Example: an A (4.0) in a 3-credit course, a B+ (3.3) in a 4-credit course and a B (3.0) in a 3-credit course gives (4.0×3 + 3.3×4 + 3.0×3) ÷ 10 = (12 + 13.2 + 9) ÷ 10 = 3.42 GPA.
GPA Scale (4.0)
| Letter Grade | Percentage | GPA |
|---|---|---|
| A+ | 97–100 | 4.0 |
| A | 93–96 | 4.0 |
| A- | 90–92 | 3.7 |
| B+ | 87–89 | 3.3 |
| B | 83–86 | 3.0 |
| B- | 80–82 | 2.7 |
| C+ | 77–79 | 2.3 |
| C | 73–76 | 2.0 |
| C- | 70–72 | 1.7 |
| D+ | 67–69 | 1.3 |
| D | 65–66 | 1.0 |
| F | Below 65 | 0.0 |
Scales vary: some schools award 4.3 for an A+ and some districts use different percentage bands. If your school publishes its own scale, follow theirs — the calculator’s math (points × credits ÷ credits) stays the same.
How to Raise Your GPA
- Credits are leverage: an A in a 4-credit course moves your GPA more than an A in a 1-credit course. Protect your grades in high-credit classes first.
- Retake policy: many colleges replace the grade when you retake a failed course — often the fastest cumulative GPA repair there is.
- Do the cumulative math before the term starts: enter your current GPA above, then test scenarios. You will see exactly which term GPA you need — and whether a goal is realistic in one semester.
- Standardized tests still matter: estimate your exam standing with our ACT Score Calculator and AP score calculators.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a good GPA?
On a 4.0 scale, 3.0 (a B average) is solid, 3.5+ is strong for college admissions, and 3.7+ is highly competitive. “Good” depends on the schools or jobs you are targeting.
How do I calculate my GPA from percentages?
Convert each percentage to a letter grade using the scale table above, then to grade points, then average them weighted by credits. The converter at the top of this page handles a single percentage instantly.
What is the difference between semester and cumulative GPA?
Semester (term) GPA covers one term only. Cumulative GPA combines every term you have completed — use the cumulative section above to project yours.
Can a weighted GPA be higher than 4.0?
Yes. With Honors and AP bonuses, weighted GPAs can reach 5.0. An unweighted GPA can never exceed 4.0.
Do middle schools use GPA?
Many do, on the same 4.0 scale, usually unweighted and with 1 credit per class. Enter 1 as the credits for every course.
Is this GPA calculator free?
Yes — free, instant, and no sign-up. Your grades never leave your browser.
