What Is a Salary Calculator?
A salary calculator translates pay from one period to another. Job offers rarely use the same units — one is quoted hourly, the next as an annual salary, a third as a monthly figure that might be gross or net. This calculator puts every period side by side, gross and estimated take-home, so you can compare offers honestly. It is part of our Finance Calculators collection.
Salary Conversion Examples (Verified)
- $30/hour at 40 hours a week, 52 weeks = $62,400/year ($1,200/week, $5,200/month)
- $85,000/year = $40.87/hour at 40 hours a week ($1,634.62/week, $7,083.33/month)
- $25/hour part-time at 25 hours a week = $32,500/year — hours matter as much as the rate
Comparing a job in a high-tax state with one in a no-income-tax state? Add your state rate above — a few percent of state tax on $85,000 is several thousand dollars a year, which is exactly why “salary calculator after taxes” searches keep growing. Budgeting around the result is easier with our Rent Calculator for the 30%-of-income housing rule, and our Hours Calculator for tracking the actual hours behind the pay.
How Salary Conversions Work
- Annual = hourly × hours per week × weeks per year. Full-time usually means 40 × 52 = 2,080 hours.
- Biweekly is not semi-monthly: biweekly pay gives 26 paychecks a year; twice-a-month pay gives 24. Two months a year have a “third” biweekly paycheck.
- Unpaid time off shrinks the year: if you take 2 unpaid weeks, use 50 weeks, not 52.
- Take-home is a different number: federal income tax (after the standard deduction), FICA at 7.65% for Social Security and Medicare, and state tax all come out before the money reaches you.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I convert hourly pay to an annual salary?
Multiply the hourly rate by hours worked per week, then by weeks per year. $30 × 40 × 52 = $62,400.
What is $30 an hour annually after taxes?
Very roughly $50,000–$53,000 for a single filer with no state tax, depending on deductions and credits — use the estimate table above with your state rate for a closer figure.
Why is my take-home less than my salary?
Federal and state income tax, FICA (7.65%), and any benefits premiums or retirement contributions are withheld from gross pay.
How many work hours are in a year?
2,080 for a standard 40-hour week over 52 weeks, before holidays and vacation.
Is biweekly or monthly pay better?
The annual total is the same; biweekly just lands differently — 26 checks with two “extra-check” months, versus 24 even monthly checks. Budget on the monthly equivalent either way.
