This dog age calculator converts pet years to human years the modern way — fast early maturation, then size-dependent aging for dogs — and handles cats too. The old “multiply by 7” rule gets almost every age wrong.

The Old ×7 Rule Would Say–

Why "Multiply by 7" Is Wrong

The ×7 rule assumes pets age in a straight line. They do not: a one-year-old dog is not a 7-year-old child — it is sexually mature, roughly equivalent to a 15-year-old human. Aging then slows but never equalizes, and for dogs the adult pace depends on size: giant breeds age fastest and live shortest (9–11 years), small breeds slowest (14–18). The modern consensus schedule — used by the AVMA and most vets, and by this calculator — is 15 for year one, +9 for year two, then +4 to +6 per year by size (cats: +4). What the "Human Age" Is Good For

  • Care timing: senior screening (bloodwork, joint and dental checks) is recommended from the last 25% of expected lifespan — about age 7–8 for large dogs, 10+ for small dogs and cats.
  • Honest expectations: a "middle-aged" 6-year-old Great Dane and a 6-year-old Chihuahua are in different life chapters; exercise, diet and vet cadence should differ.
  • The newer science: DNA-methylation studies suggest a logarithmic curve (a 2-year-old dog's epigenetic age is like a human in their early 40s, then it flattens). The table method above remains the practical standard; precision matters less than abandoning ×7.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate my dog's age in human years?

Year one counts as ~15 human years, year two adds ~9 (total 24), then add 4 per year for small dogs, 5 for medium, 6 for large. A 7-year-old medium dog is about 49 in human terms.

Is one dog year really 7 human years?

No — that rule underestimates young pets (a 2-year-old dog is ~24, not 14) and muddles seniors. It survives because it is memorable, not because it is accurate.

Why do big dogs age faster?

Large breeds grow faster and carry higher rates of age-related disease (cancers, joint failure); their accelerated growth appears to come with accelerated aging — the exception to the usual "bigger mammals live longer" rule.

How old is a 10-year-old cat in human years?

About 56 — a senior-adjacent middle age. Indoor cats reaching 15 (≈76) and even 20 (≈96) are increasingly common with modern care.

What is the oldest a dog can live?

Small breeds occasionally reach 18–20; the verified record holder, an Australian Cattle Dog named Bluey, lived 29 years (1910–1939) — an outlier, not a plan.

Is this dog age calculator free?

Yes — free, instant, no sign-up, for dogs and cats.
