Our free Cat Age Calculator converts your cat’s age into a human-equivalent age and tells you which life stage your cat is in. Enter the years and months, and you get an instant result — no sign-up needed.

Many people still repeat the old claim that one cat year equals seven human years. That myth is wrong because cats do not age at a steady rate. A cat matures very quickly in the first two years of life, and then aging slows down to a steadier pace. A one-year-old cat is already much more mature than a seven-year-old child.

Knowing a better human equivalent helps you understand what your cat needs now, as food, play, vet checks, and rest change with age.

Enter your cat's age in years and months to find the human-equivalent age and life stage.

Human-equivalent age:

Life stage:

Display rule: the human age is rounded to 1 decimal place. If it lands on a whole number, it is shown without a decimal (for example, 24, not 24.0). This is an estimate based on AAHA/AAFP life stages, not a veterinary diagnosis.

What Is the Cat Age Calculator?

The Cat Age Calculator is a simple tool on our Biology Calculators hub that turns a cat’s real age into an approximate human age. It also names the cat’s life stage, from Kitten through to Geriatric.

It is useful for new kitten owners, for anyone who took in a rescue cat, and for owners wondering when an adult cat becomes a senior. The result is an estimate for care planning, not a medical finding.

If you need a person’s age instead, use our Age Calculator. For other quick number work, our Scientific Calculator is also free.

How Does It Work? The Cat Age Formula

The calculator uses the life-stage approach described in the AAHA/AAFP feline life stage guidelines. Cats age fast at first, then more slowly, so the formula has three parts.

First, work out the cat’s total age in years:

t = years + (months ÷ 12)

Here, t is the cat’s total age in years, years is the whole years you entered, and months is the extra months. The result, H, is the human-equivalent age.

  • Up to 1 year (t ≤ 1): H = 15 × t. The first year counts as about 15 human years. Kittens under one year are scaled evenly, so a 6-month kitten (t = 0.5) is 15 × 0.5 = 7.5 human years.
  • From 1 to 2 years (1 < t ≤ 2): H = 15 + 9 × (t − 1). The second year adds 9 more years, so a 2-year-old cat reaches 24 human years.
  • Over 2 years (t > 2): H = 24 + 4 × (t − 2). Each extra cat year after age two adds about 4 human years.

The human age is rounded to one decimal place. If it lands on a whole number, it is shown as a whole number, for example 24 rather than 24.0.

How to Use the Cat Age Calculator

  1. Enter your cat’s age in whole years in the years box. Enter 0 if your cat is under one year old.
  2. Enter any extra months in the months box, from 0 to 11. Enter 0 if there are no extra months.
  3. Click Calculate.
  4. Read the human-equivalent age and the life stage shown below the button.
  5. Click Reset if you want to clear the boxes and try another age.

Cat Age Calculator Example

Suppose your cat is 5 years old, with no extra months. Here t = 5, which is over 2, so use the third part of the formula:

H = 24 + 4 × (t − 2) = 24 + 4 × (5 − 2) = 24 + 4 × 3 = 24 + 12 = 36 human years.

A 5-year-old cat falls in the 3 to 6 year range, so its life stage is Adult. In human terms, this cat is roughly like a 36-year-old person.

Cat Age to Human Age Conversion Table

The table below uses the same formula.

Cat Age Human Age Life Stage
6 months 7.5 Kitten
1 year 15 Junior
2 years 24 Junior
3 years 28 Adult
5 years 36 Adult
7 years 44 Mature
10 years 56 Mature
12 years 64 Senior
15 years 76 Geriatric
20 years 96 Geriatric

Important Points and Assumptions

  • This is an estimate based on AAHA/AAFP life stages, not a vet diagnosis. Only a vet who knows your cat can judge its health and true condition.
  • Indoor and outdoor cats can age differently. Outdoor cats face more risks, accidents, and illness, which can shorten life.
  • Breed matters. Some breeds live longer than others, and larger or pedigree cats may develop age-related problems at different times.
  • Health, weight, diet, dental care, and neutering all affect how a real cat ages. Two cats of the same age can be in very different shape.
  • The life stages used here are: Kitten, 0–6 months; Junior, 7 months–2 years; Adult, 3–6 years; Mature, 7–10 years; Senior, 11–14 years; and Geriatric, 15 years and over.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the 7-year myth. Multiplying by seven makes a 1-year-old cat “7” and a 2-year-old “14,” both far too young. It also misses how fast kittens mature.
  • Entering 12 or more months. Months should be 0 to 11. Twelve months is another year, so add it to the years box instead.
  • Treating the result as exact. A result like 36 does not mean your cat is exactly like a 36-year-old person. It is a guide for care, not a precise measure.
  • Ignoring the life stage. The stage often matters more than the number, because it points to the checks and care that suit that phase of life.
  • Guessing an unknown age as fact. If a rescue cat’s age is only an estimate, your result will only be as good as that estimate.

How to Interpret Your Result

Use the human age to picture where your cat is in life. A Junior cat at 15 to 24 human years is young and active. An Adult or Mature cat is in its settled middle years, when weight and dental health need watching. A Senior or Geriatric result is a prompt to book more regular vet checks, watch for changes in appetite, movement, or behaviour, and make the home easier with a lower litter tray and warm, easy-to-reach resting places.

If the result surprises you, check the years and months you entered first. Breed, health, and lifestyle can move a real cat ahead of or behind the average.

Frequently Asked Questions

How old is a 5-year-old cat in human years?

A 5-year-old cat is about 36 in human years. The formula gives 24 + 4 × (5 − 2) = 36, and the life stage is Adult.

Why is 1 cat year not equal to 7 human years?

Because cats mature much faster at the start of life. A 1-year-old cat is already mature, closer to a 15-year-old human than a 7-year-old. After age two, aging settles to about 4 human years per cat year.

What life stage is a 10-year-old cat?

A 10-year-old cat is Mature, with a human-equivalent age of 56. Senior starts at 11 years under the AAHA/AAFP stages used here.

How do I enter a kitten that is only a few months old?

Enter 0 for years and the number of months for months. For example, 0 years and 6 months gives 7.5 human years and the Kitten stage.

Is this calculator accurate for every breed?

No single formula fits every breed exactly. Breed, size, health, and whether a cat lives indoors or outdoors all change real aging. Treat the result as a sensible average estimate, not a breed-specific finding.

When is a cat considered a senior?

Under the stages used here, Senior is 11 to 14 years and Geriatric is 15 years and over. Many vets suggest twice-yearly checks once a cat reaches the senior stages.
