This business days calculator counts working days between two dates — Monday to Friday, weekends excluded — with an optional deduction for holidays that fall on weekdays. It’s the arithmetic behind “delivery in 5–7 business days,” contract deadlines, payroll windows and every project plan that pretends weekends don’t exist.
“5 Business Days” Is Longer Than You Think
Business-day language exists to stretch time politely: five business days from a Friday is the following Friday — seven calendar days — and across a holiday weekend, nine. This calculator counts them exactly: walk the span, credit Monday–Friday, deduct the weekday holidays you specify. The defaults span October 2026 (Thu Oct 1 → Sat Oct 31): 31 calendar days containing 22 weekdays — in span style that's 22 business days; in deadline style (excluding both endpoints) 21, since Oct 1 (Thu) is a business day and Oct 31 (Sat) isn't. The counting-style selector exists because the ambiguity is real and expensive: employment contracts, SLA penalties, court filing deadlines (which have their own rules — many jurisdictions roll a weekend/holiday deadline to the next business day) and refund promises each count differently, and the first step of any dispute is agreeing on the convention.
Holiday handling deserves its footnote: rather than hard-code one country's calendar (this page's readers span many), you enter how many of YOUR holidays fall on weekdays inside the span — the only ones that matter. US federal holidays in a span, UK bank holidays, or your company's shutdown days all enter through that one honest input. A holiday that falls on a Saturday was never a business day; deducting it anyway is the classic double-count this design prevents.
Worked Examples (Verified)
- October 2026 span (defaults, span style): 22 business days among 31 calendar days (weekends: 3,4,10,11,17,18,24,25,31).
- The shipping promise: order Monday, “3 business days” deadline style → Tuesday 1, Wednesday 2, Thursday 3: delivery by Thursday — demonstrating why sellers love the unit: a “3-day” promise that spans most of a working week once a weekend leans on it.
- Holiday bite: the same October span with 1 weekday holiday entered (say a regional observance) → 21 business days span style; the deduction applies only because it lands Mon–Fri.
Business-Day Discipline
- Agree the counting style in writing: include/exclude endpoints is a 1–2 day difference that becomes an argument precisely at the deadline.
- Whose holidays? The counterparty's jurisdiction (and sometimes the delivery address's) governs — a US seller's Thanksgiving week is a normal week in London and vice versa.
- Cutoff times are invisible in day counts: an order at 11:58 p.m. “today” starts counting tomorrow in most warehouses; day arithmetic alone doesn't capture it.
- Some industries bend the week: UAE weekends historically Fri–Sat (now Sat–Sun for government), some retail/logistics run Saturday as a business day — if your counterparty does, their “business day” isn't this page's default Mon–Fri.
- Courts and regulators publish their own calendars and rollover rules; never substitute a generic count for a filing deadline — verify against the authority's own calendar.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do you count business days between two dates?
Count the Monday–Friday days in the span, then deduct holidays falling on weekdays. October 2026 contains 22 weekdays. Whether you include the start and end dates depends on convention — deadline/shipping style excludes the start (count begins tomorrow), leave/span style includes both endpoints. This calculator offers both styles explicitly and itemizes the weekend days inside your span.
How many business days are in a month?
Typically 20–23, depending on the month's length and alignment (and holidays): months starting on a Monday with 31 days reach 23 weekdays; February in a non-leap year aligned Mon–Sun gives exactly 20. October 2026 has 22. Payroll and billing cycles that assume “22 business days a month” are using the long-run average — verify your specific month here before scheduling anything rigid against it.
Why do deliveries say “5–7 business days”?
Because it sounds shorter than the 7–11 calendar days it usually means (weekends plus processing), and because carriers genuinely don't move most freight on weekends. Five business days from a Wednesday order typically lands the following Wednesday; from a Friday, the Friday after. This calculator, set to deadline style with your order date and +N span, converts the promise into an actual date range you can plan around.
Do holidays count as business days?
No — a holiday observed on a weekday removes that day from business operations for the institutions observing it, so it deducts from the count. This calculator asks YOU how many weekday holidays fall in the span (your jurisdiction's calendar), because holiday lists are national and regional, not universal. Holidays falling on weekends deduct nothing — those days weren't business days anyway.
What if a deadline falls on a weekend?
Convention-dependent: many legal and banking systems roll the deadline forward to the next business day; some commercial contracts roll it BACK to the preceding one; shipping promises simply deliver the next business day. There is no universal default — the contract's own text (or the governing rules, for courts) decides. Compute both the raw count here and then apply your document's rollover rule.
Business days vs working days vs calendar days?
Calendar days: every day on the calendar. Business/working days: the Mon–Fri (minus holidays) subset — the two terms are synonyms in most usage. The distinction that matters is in documents: “within 10 days” almost always means calendar days, “within 10 business days” the filtered count, and confusing them misprices a deadline by up to 40%. When a document is silent, ask — the cheap moment is before signing.
How do I add N business days to a date?
Walk forward day by day from the start (excluding it, deadline style), counting only Mon–Fri (skipping your holidays) until you reach N — the landing date is your deadline. This page's engine does the inverse (dates → count); for the forward direction, iterate: check a candidate end date here and adjust until the count reads N. Project tools (Excel's WORKDAY function) implement the same walk with holiday lists.
Is this business days calculator free?
Yes — free, instant, no sign-up. Pick two dates, a counting style and your weekday-holiday count for the exact business-day total.
