This bench press calculator estimates your bench press one-rep max (1RM) from a set you have actually done, and builds the percentage chart coaches use to program working weights. Enter the weight you pressed and the reps you completed.

What Is a Bench Press Calculator?
A bench press calculator estimates the most you could bench for a single rep — your 1RM — without actually attempting a dangerous maximal lift. It uses the Epley formula, the standard in strength coaching: 1RM = weight × (1 + reps ÷ 30). It then converts that 1RM into the percentage-based working weights that nearly every serious program is written in. For other lifts, our general One Rep Max Calculator covers squats, deadlifts and more; this page is the bench-specific version in our Sports Calculators collection.
Worked Example (Verified)
You bench 225 lb for 5 reps: estimated 1RM = 225 × (1 + 5/30) = 262.5 lb ≈ 263 lb. From the chart: 85% work ≈ 223 lb, 75% volume work ≈ 197 lb, 65% speed work ≈ 171 lb. Estimates are most accurate for sets of 2–6 reps; beyond 10 reps the formula drifts, because endurance starts to matter more than maximal strength.
Bench Press Standards (Rough Guide, × Bodyweight)
| Level | Men | Women |
|---|---|---|
| Beginner | ~0.5× | ~0.25× |
| Novice | ~0.75× | ~0.5× |
| Intermediate | ~1.0× | ~0.65× |
| Advanced | ~1.5× | ~1.0× |
| Elite | ~2.0× | ~1.4× |
These are population guideposts for trained lifters, not judgments — limb lengths, training history and body composition all move them. Progress is the metric that matters: add weight or reps over months and the estimate climbs.
Training With Percentages
- 90–100%: maximal strength and peaking — low reps, long rests, a spotter always.
- 80–90%: the strength-building workhorse zone.
- 65–80%: hypertrophy and volume — where most weekly bench work belongs.
- Below 65%: warm-ups, technique and speed work.
- Test with reps, not max attempts: a hard set of 3–5 and this calculator is safer and nearly as informative as a true 1RM day. Overall conditioning pairs with our VO2 Max Calculator.

Frequently Asked Questions
How accurate is the Epley estimate?
For sets of 2–6 reps, typically within about ±5% for experienced lifters. It is an estimate to program training with — not a tested max.
What is a good bench press?
Benching your bodyweight is a solid intermediate milestone for men; 1.5× bodyweight is advanced. See the standards table for the full ladder.
How often should I test my bench max?
Most lifters estimate from rep sets every session and only test a true single every few months, if at all — the training percentages do the daily work.
Does the calculator work in kilograms?
Yes — switch the unit toggle; the formula is unit-agnostic.
Why does my estimate drop when I use high reps?
Formulas assume each rep costs the same fraction of your max. At 10+ reps, muscular endurance and technique breakdown dominate, so estimates get less reliable — use lower-rep sets.
Is this bench press calculator free?
Yes — free, instant, no sign-up. Always use a spotter or safety arms for heavy attempts.
