This batting average calculator computes the full slash line — AVG, OBP, SLG and OPS — from your batting record, so the whole story (contact, patience, power) shows in one line.
Four Rates, One Batter
AVG = H/AB; OBP adds walks and hit-by-pitches over plate appearances; SLG weights hits by bases (TB/AB); OPS simply adds OBP + SLG. The pitching mirror lives on our ERA + WHIP Calculator. Part of our Sports Calculators collection.
Worked Example (Verified)
- Defaults (500 AB, 150 H, 30 2B, 5 3B, 15 HR, 60 BB, 5 HBP, 5 SF): AVG .300, total bases 235 → SLG .470, OBP 215/570 = .377, OPS .847 — an excellent season by any era’s standard
- The walk dividend: same hits but zero walks → OBP falls to .306 and OPS to .776 — seventy points of value invisible to batting average
- Power isolation: ISO (isolated power) = SLG − AVG = .170 here — the analysts’ shortcut this slash line computes for free
- Small-sample theater: 3-for-4 opening day is a .750 average — rate stats need ~500 PA to stabilize, which the defaults deliberately assume
Reading Slash Lines Like an Analyst
- BABIP context: a .300 AVG riding a .380 BABIP is luck-flavored; the same on .290 BABIP is skill.
- OPS+ normalizes OPS to league/park (100 = average) — beyond this page, but OPS is its raw material.
- Plate appearances ≠ at-bats: walks, HBP, sacrifices and interference sit in PA only — OBP’s denominator respects the difference.
- Softball and youth leagues use identical formulas; the benchmarks shift down/up by level, not the math.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do you calculate batting average?
Hits ÷ at-bats: 150 ÷ 500 = .300. At-bats exclude walks, hit-by-pitches, and sacrifices (those are plate appearances but not AB). Batting average is the headline member of the slash line this calculator completes with OBP, SLG and OPS.
What is a good OPS?
League average sits near .730–.750 in modern MLB. .800 is a solid everyday player, .850 strong (our worked example), .900 All-Star caliber, 1.000+ elite/MVP territory. OPS = OBP + SLG — crude addition of unlike quantities that nonetheless tracks run production remarkably well.
How is slugging percentage calculated?
Total bases ÷ at-bats: singles count 1, doubles 2, triples 3, home runs 4. Defaults: (100×1 + 30×2 + 5×3 + 15×4) = 235 TB ÷ 500 = .470. Despite the name it’s not a percentage — the maximum is 4.000 (a home run every at-bat).
Why is OBP more important than AVG?
Because outs are baseball’s currency: OBP measures how often a batter avoids making one, by any route — hit, walk, or hit-by-pitch. Two .280 hitters can differ by 60+ OBP points via walk rate, and that gap is worth real runs (the insight Moneyball monetized).
Do sacrifice bunts count in OBP?
Sacrifice flies do (they’re in the denominator), sacrifice bunts do not (excluded from OBP’s denominator by rule — the batter is deemed to have traded himself deliberately). Catcher’s interference also adds a PA quirk: it reaches base without touching AVG or OBP denominators in the standard treatment.
